Suggest Treatment For Back Pain Radiating To Leg

i have severe pain at the bottom of my spine and into my upper leg. i am on controlled drugs ( TARGANACT) for the pain as well as 8 co codamol a day. these dont really do anything.i had an mri scan yesterday and am waiting for the results now.what drugs might my gp put me on and would he suggest surgery. im 57 and very over weight. i dont work now.
