Suggest Treatment For Barotrauma Mediated Ear Infection

I developed an ear infection immediately after going on an airplane ride, during the descent into my destination. I was prescribed amoxicillan 4 days ago, but I still have fluid and hearing loss, no improvement. Does amoxicillan even work for barotrauma ear infections?? Should I go to a doctor right away to change the treatment?

Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

Looking at your symptoms, you are suffering probably from Eustachian tube blockage. It is a tube which connects the middle ear with the nose and is responsible for equalization of middle ear pressure with outer atmospheric pressure.During ascent or descent of flight, due to sudden change in outer pressure, the Eustachian tube may not be able to equalize the middle ear pressure with the outer atmospheric pressure resulting in negative middle ear pressure with fluid collection in middle ear. This fluid may get infected by bacteria resulting in ear pus discharge, ear pain, fever, etc. In that case Antibiotics like amoxycillin are needed.

Otherwise you may get relief by taking the following medication:
Analgesic with Antiinflammatory like Ibuprofen,
Oral decongestant like Phenylephrine and Nasal decongestant drops like Xylometazoline(to be used only if you are not suffering from hypertension), Mucolytic like Ambroxol,Antihistaminic like Cetrizine.

Also do steam inhalation.Drink lots of warm fluids.Avoid cold food and dust.

After following the above measures,if your symptoms are not improving, then it would be advisable to consult an Otolaryngologist doctor.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.
