Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in her teens, but since turning 20 and having a baby at 21, her symptoms seem to subside. She came more confident, assertive and in complete control. After being married for a little over 1 year now, she all of a sudden no longer wants to be in the relationship despite the repercussions to her 2 1/2 year daughter. She has in her mind that she must find her happiness even though her husband is only guilty of being hard to get along with. He s a great father and provider and husband. She refuses counseling or any help. She is great with her daughter but she is a person who is never wrong, stays tired a lot and has racing thoughts. I am at wits end as to what I am supposed to do to help as it would be like pulling all my teeth to reach her. What do you suggest?
From what you have described, it appears that she may be having a hypomanic episode. In a hypomanic episode, symptoms are less severe than in mania and so, family members often are unable to identify it. A sudden change in behavior along with acing thoughts points towards this. Please motivate her to postpone her decision of separating from her husband for a few months and meanwhile, discuss her change in behavior with her doctor so that it can be treated.
Best wishes.
