Hello,

The main causes of hyperpigmentation are:
1)Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation from acne, eczema, or psoriasis.
2)Melasma.It can appear in anyone, but is more common in dark skin and in women who are pregnant or women taking estrogen supplements or birth control pills.
3)Overexposure to the sun resulting in sun damage.

Treatment:

-Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher all over the year.
- Topical moisturizers that has as ingredients Soy,Niacinimide and Ellagic Acid works by inhibiting the transfer of melanosomes into the top layer of the skin and as antioxidant(ellagic acid). While the lignin Peroxidase break down melanin in the skin.
- Topical Skin lighteners as Arbutin,Kojic Acid, licorice extracts,Vitamin C can be useful
-Chemical peel (pigment irregularities and scarring can occur if not done by an experienced clinician)
-Laser peel( CO2 lasers and fractional lasers are popular choices).
-Treatment with intense pulsed light.

Hope this helps,
Kind regards,
Dr.Mersi
