Suggest Treatment For Blurred Vision In An Elderly Person

Hello Dr. Meyer, My mother 92 she has what I believe they call grey star with her eyes. That is her vision in the middle is blurred while the outside area she is somewhat clear (this a least what I remember from what she told me). She s present in a old age home under care. The treatment the doctors are using here is to remove the water from her eyes. (Again I no expect, this is what she told me). I given to understand that there no real cure to to this problem and that one simply has to live with it. So here my questions; 1) Can this be cured, treated or corrected? 2) My mother love to read, but with this condition she can t now. Is there something we might be able give her that assist her to help to read once again? 3) When she go out of the house, I see the strong sunlight hurts her eyes. Might sunglasses help here? If so what might you be able to recommend. I thank you and hope to hear from you shortly. Until then, with kind regards, S. Engels 8185 Winkel, Switzerland

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sorry to say but this is not curable. It can be just a supportive treatment to ease her discomfort. Don`t expect any more miracles for her vision.

With number glasses if she can read then that is the only hope for her reading, otherwise not. Polarized sunglasses are best for her to protect hurting eyes in the sunlight.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
