Suggest Treatment For Bone Pain And Tumor In Parathyroid

My 35 year old daughter has been going to the Cleveland Clinic for about 7 years. The best, right. I am sure that is true but so far they have not been able to help her. Her symptoms, extreme fatigue, bone pain that comes on sudden, they refered to it as hungry bone syndrome she also gets dehydrated very easy in spite of drinking at least 6-8 glassed of water a day. Blood test showed very low vitamin D and very low ferriten. When the ferriten levels are low she gets out of breath easy. They did find a parathyroid tumor and removed it and for a while she felt better. Then the fatigue returned and her blood work showed low vitamin D, ferriten (as low as 3) at that time they gave her iron infusion treatments. Again she felt better for a while. Then the bone pain returned, again low vitamin D, ferriten, and also low potassium. They told her she is not absorbing. More test, more doctors. Test for parasites (she had been in Africa about 9 years ago) colonoscopy, endoscopy, no crohns disease. The doctors thought maybe the pancreas is not functioning like it should, test show all normal with one result questionable. She was put on an elimination diet, no alergy to gluten, but the test for wheat was 40 so wheat was eliminated from her diet. She has always been very active and has very good eating habits. She eats a lot of fruit, fish, chicken (she seems to have trouble digesting red meats) she stays away from sugars, doesn t smoke, drink or use drugs. It is very sad to see her so pale, weak and tired all of the time. She has seen so many doctors. If you are able to offer advise it would be a blessing. Thank you for taking the time to consider offering your opion. Dawn

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
After parathyroid adenoma removal, hungry bone syndrome symptoms persist for months up to 1 year. Usually the symptoms are are not specific and these patients go from one doctor to another without solution.
She needs to check calcium and magnesium level and correct them if they persist low.
She should also be on VitD supplements ( according to VitD level).
Wish her good health.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
