Suggest Treatment For Bowel Incontinence

I am 70 years old man, having no blood pressure, no sugar etc. As such I can claim to be keeping good health. Three years ago I had to undergo a treatment for prostate cancer and had to get radiations. I have survived from prostate cancer but probably as side effect of radiations I am having loose motions whenever Some meal or liquid is taken in. It continues till the load in my stomach is balanced. My daily diet is not heavy or much i.e. 02xRusk in breakfast, a loaf of wheat bread (100 gm) in lunch, some seasonal fruit, cup of tea with 02xBiscuits and a loaf of wheat bread/Rice in dinner. I take extra care and avoided overloading my stomach. I am facing this situation for the past 03xyears ever since I had survived from prostate cancer. My present PSA level is 0.6 against 4 as normal in my age. Originally PSA was 66 when prostate cancer was diagnosed. I shall appreciate if some medicine is prescribed or some change in my diet is suggested because on many occasions I feel embarrassed when I cannot control the loose motion. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bowel incontinence can be a difficult condition to deal with, but there are several treatment options available. In your case, it sounds like the loose stools may be related to the radiation therapy you received for prostate cancer. It would be a good idea to discuss this issue with your oncologist or urologist to see if any specific interventions may help.

In addition, here are some general tips for managing bowel incontinence:
* Dietary changes: It's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet to keep your bowels regular. Try to avoid foods that are known to cause loose stools, such as spicy or greasy foods, caffeine, and alcohol.
* Fiber: Adding more fiber to your diet can help bulk up your stool and make it easier to control. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes contain a lot of fiber.
* Medications: There are several medications available that can help control bowel incontinence, including anti-diarrheal medications, laxatives, and stool softeners. Talk to your doctor about whether any of these medications might be appropriate for you.
* Pelvic floor exercises: Exercises that strengthen the muscles around the anus and rectum can help improve control over bowel movements. Ask your doctor or a physical therapist for guidance on how to perform these exercises.
* Bowel training: This involves trying to establish a regular schedule for bowel movements by using techniques such as biofeedback, relaxation, and positive reinforcement. A continence nurse or specialist can guide how to do this.

It's important to remember that bowel incontinence is a medical condition and nothing to be embarrassed about. Talking to your doctor and seeking treatment can help improve your quality of life and make it easier to manage this condition.
