Suggest Treatment For Breakouts On Scalp Causing Sore Patches On Forehead And Neck

I have agent orange and my scalp breaks out randomly and it looks like I have extremely bad dandruff. I get sore patches on my forehead and it gets all over my neck as well. A simple washing helps but it s still there & I am unable to contain it at times. I inherited it from my father who was in the military and was exposed to it.

Hi,

It sounds like you may be experiencing a condition known as scalp psoriasis, which can cause breakouts on the scalp, forehead, and neck, and lead to sore patches and flakes resembling dandruff. This condition can be aggravated by exposure to certain chemicals, including Agent Orange, and can be inherited.

Here are some suggestions for treatment:
- Use medicated shampoos: Look for shampoos that contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, coal tar, or ketoconazole, which can help soothe and control scalp psoriasis symptoms. Use these shampoos regularly and leave them on your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing them off.
- Apply topical treatments: Topical treatments such as corticosteroid creams or ointments, vitamin D analogs, and calcineurin inhibitors can help reduce inflammation and itching associated with scalp psoriasis. Apply these treatments as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Avoid irritants: Try to avoid using harsh hair products, such as hairsprays, gels, and dyes, which can irritate the scalp and exacerbate psoriasis symptoms. Also, avoid scratching or picking at your scalp, as this can lead to infection.
- Get enough rest and manage stress: Stress and lack of sleep can trigger or worsen psoriasis symptoms, so it is important to practice stress-management techniques and get enough rest to help keep symptoms under control.
- Consult a healthcare provider: If your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment, consult a healthcare provider who can provide additional treatment options, such as phototherapy or oral medications.

Overall, scalp psoriasis can be a challenging condition to manage, but with proper treatment and care, you can help alleviate your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
