I have a severely compromised respiratory system, have been diagnosed with Myobacterium Avium Intracellular complex, but have had no follow up since my appointment 5 weeks ago. Feeling unwell, I have almost finished 7 days of Moxyfloxasin, and am still feeling really crappy, breathing laboured, appitite not that good.I'm getting worried I should be being treated more assertively.....can you help me
Hello As you mentioned that you are having Mycobacterium Avium intracellular complex ( also known as myco avium complex or MAC or M.intracellulare). Since this evolves over a long period , it is rarely necessary to begin treatment on emergency basis before identifying the infecting species but in your case it is identified , so treatment is simple . MAC infection requires MULTIDRUG therapy with a macrolide ( clarithromycin or azithromycin ) , ethambutol and a rifampicin . Thearapy is prolonged , generally for 12 months after culture conversion;typically a course lasts for at least 18 months . In my opinion consult another physician(2nd one ) and get his opinion as the drugs of choice I MENTIONED. Hope this will help you. Moxifloxacin is not effective in this strain. Good luck.
