Suggest Treatment For Burning Sensation In Right Upper Part Of Back

For the past 6 days I have had a burning pain in the right upper part of my back, between the bottom of the neck and the shoulder blade. The pain goes down into the side of my right upper and lower arm. Nothing seems to relieve the pain. Up until 6 days ago I worked out regularly with free weights and did stability ball classes at the gym. I have been taking OTC ibuprofen, 400 mgs. every 6 hours for 2 days and putting ice on the area with no relief. Do you think this is serious, like a herniated disc? Most muscles pulls I have had in the past have resolved in 2-3 days. Thank you for any help you can give.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Burning pain usually occurs due to nerve related disorders. Nerve compression or peripheral neuropathy should be ruled out. Kindly check your blood sugar and vitamin B12 levels which are the important cause of peripheral neuropathy. Ibuprofen and other pain killers will not reduce nerve related pain. Drugs like Amitriptylline or Pregabalin should be used.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
