Suggest Treatment For Burning Sensation On The Skin

Hello, My dad is 83 years old. I believe that he has Shingles. He went to his primary care months ago. To make a long story short. My dad has seen two specialist concerning this problem. Let s just say both visits were useless. They don t know what it is. His doctor gave him a cream to put on it. He got a allergic reaction to it. It s above his eyebrow. It looked like it burned his skin off. He s had this problem now for 5 months. I just recently contacted his doctor. He has him on an antibiotic. He takes it 4 times a day. he just started taking it yesterday.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what your father had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it is posted likely postherpetic neuralgia which is bothering him and it can be very painful. Using OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help but may not be sufficient and he may need more potent analgesics like tramadol or gabapentin.

Nerve pain suppressants like carbamazepine or duloxetine may also be needed. He might be on antiviral acyclovir for the moment. Keep good hydration and keep following to a neurologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
