Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking a 5 day course of oral prednisone total 40 mg each day. I take trazodone 50 mg qhs. I just took my first dose several hours ago. I notice a bit of chest tightness, like I want to take deeper breaths. Doctors always comment that my heart and lungs are excellent, though I did take this prednisone for a tenacious allergic inflammation in mucous membranes back of throat, neck level irritation, and sensation of irritation in upper lung fields (nothing on xray; also checked out for infection, none) following a cold. Could this be an interaction or a side effect of prednisone?
Chest tightness can be caused due to cold and bronchitis. But commonly it occurs due to angina, this is not a permanent damage to the heart. It is caused by stress, emotional cause, anxiety, cigarette smoking, exercise, etc. Angina results due to the temporary reduction of blood flow to the heart.
Get angina (stable, unstable, variant) diagnosed. Get lipid function tests done, X-ray, ECHO, EKG, Coronary angiography done. Calcium channel blockers and beta blockers do help. Stop smoking, control weight, avoid large meals & take fruits, veggies. Avoid dairy products & red meat. Take care.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
