Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been told by my GP that my cholesterol levels were 7.3 and told me that I need to take medication, I declined the offer and he referred me to a dietician, I am 54 year old lady, I am not over weight, I'm very careful on what I eat, don't drink or smoke and do plenty exercise, my blood pressure is fine my father died of heart attack he was only 59, do you think that I should take medication?
Good morning, Unfortunately, your cholesterol is extremely high and the doctor's recommendations to put you on statin mediation is consistent with current guidelines to decrease the risk for heart disease. I can provide general things you can do to lower your cholesterol, but following a diet such as the Total Lifestyle Change diet available on the internet might be helpful if you cannot see a dietitian. You will need to keep saturated fat very low, eliminate as much as possible trans fats, decrease high glycemic carbohydrates, add Omega3 fatty acids and Nicotinic Acid. Exercise is essential - cardio mixed with strength training 150 minutes/wk. You have family history of heart disease, a risk factor for you. My suggestion, I agree with your doctor and the referral to a dietitian. You can extend the quality of your life if you work with your health care team.Best Wishes.
