Suggest Treatment For Chronic Constipation And Rapid Weight Gain

My child is 8 years old. She has suffered chronic constipation for the last few years. She has terrible tummy pains often. She has been rapidly gaining weight for the last year or so. She gets a great deal of exercise and eats healthy. She drinks mostly water with an occasional sprite or lemonade. She has been tested for celiac disease and thyroid disease which both came back good. We recently found out her CRP was elevated. A repeat was done and it is still elevated. They want to do a fecal calprotectin test which tests for ulcerative colitis and crohns disease. I m confused as to why they are doing this as she is always constipated and is not losing weight. I have a relative who was diagnosed with crohns disease as a child and their symptoms are far from similar. Can you explain any other reason for this test?tam

Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the Calprotectin is a protein released by the type of white blood cell called neutrophil.

* It indicates infection of the gut most likely as inflammatory bowel disease in usual cases.

* The normal level is around 25 mg/kg body weight, while that of above 50 mg is considered abnormal and pathological.

The treatment guidelines will be based on the diagnosis, however, following guidelines will help you

- allow him plenty of liquids
- high fiber diet
- control of excess sugary items, dairy fat
- regular aerobics

* Please , do share all of your current reports available with you, so that better guidelines can be figured out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
