Suggest Treatment For Chronic Cough While Having Lung Cancer

HI. I have had a raspy cough for about 3 weeks. I do have allergies to dust mites and mold, and the coughing started shortly after I was cleaning out my classroom for the end of the school year. But I have not had any other symptoms at all other than my chest hurting, presumably from all the coughing. Its a cough that rattles, like there is mucus , but I can t bring anything up. It s probably something simple like allergies or bronchitis, but cancer is always on the back of my mind. My aunt was recently diagnosed with it, after having just coughing. She was first told it was pneumonia, a CT scan and biopsy showed lung cancer. I can t help but get anxious.

Hi,

Your history doesn't show any sign of cancer as you suspect but for such symptoms chest examination, a chest X-ray for reassurance may be sought, and chronic bronchitis the likely cause should be ruled out. Skin prick tests for allergies, and blood counts to look for eosinophils should be done. You can use monteleukast at night for a month as well as cough suppressant like diamorphine and ammonium chloride or pseudoephedrine. Local relief with losenges may help too. If cough persists, HRCT chest for any lung parenchyma relates pathology may be needed. A pulmonologist review may also be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
