Suggest Treatment For Chronic Coughing And Sneezing

I am staying in Bangalore for the last 10 years now. But suddenly in the last 6-8 months, I have developed a chronic on coughing & sneezing. It remains for several weeks and subsides down very slowly - only to get return soon after. In fact it's so bad that the first thing I do (after waking up) is coughing (sometimes as many as 10-15 in series!). Please advise.

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. I would like to know more about you like whether you have wheezing/breathing difficulty, nose congestion, headache, eye symptoms, regurgitation of fluids/foods after heavy meals, any digestive complaints, etc etc. This will help me to understand your complaints better and therefore to make more specific suggestions for you.

2. At present, from you given history, I would think of possibility of allergic cause. I usually prescribe my such patients regular Montelukast + Levocetirizine for 2-4 weeks (depending upon response.

3. I would also suggest you regular steam inhalation and regular warm saline gargles which help to recover nose and throat respectively.

4. I would suggest you allergy testing for common air-borne allergens such as house dust mites, molds, pollens, insect proteins, animal dander, etc. This will help you identify the substances causing allergies to you as well as to know the measures to avoid them.

5. In general, please avoid exposure to dusts, smokes, air-pollution and cold air as much as possible. I know air-pollution is a major problem in Bangalore.

6. Regular breathing exercises and diet rich in vitamins & minerals will also help you to improve your lung capacity and immunity respectively in a long run.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
