Suggest Treatment For Chronic Dysphagia

Hello I have a chronic dysphagia problem and no one has cared to take my concerns seriously. One day my symptoms started randomly and I started gagging and out came what I believe to be part of my epiglottis. Ever since my throat has never felt the same and I can t tell if I am getting any liquids or food into my stomach. I had an ent look me over and dismissed me like i was nuts. I didn t think about this when it happened because I was frequently ill and figured it had been a lodged piece of vomit which it semi resembled. HELP ME!! I have been suffering with this for four years now!

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your whole query and will be answered by me.

Sore throat or epiglotitis with difficulty in swallowing are symptoms of upper respiratory infection.

Majority of cases of throat pain are due to viral infection, but in some cases it is related to bacterial infection (like streptococcal pharyngitis).

If I would have your treating doctor,I would like to give,

1) You may require higher antibiotics (quinolones or macrolides) to prevent super infection and to get rid off difficulty swallowing problem completely.

As antibiotic is a prescription drug, you can discuss with your treating doctor before acting upon. I am sure you symptoms will start subsiding once you will complete the whole course of antibiotic treatment.

Apart from antibiotics, you should also take symptomatic medications,

2) take pain killers with anti-inflammatory combination (paracetamol 500 + ibuprofen 400) drugs available over the counter.

3) Antihistamines like levocetrizine or benadryl if you have a dry cough or cold.

4) Nebulization with steam inhalation 2 to 3 times daily and warm salt water gargles which will also be helpful for symptomatic relief.

5) Take multivitamins like vitamin B complex with folic acid daily once.

I would expect you will start improving with initial 3 or 4 days dosages but again I would say not to stop the antibiotic course, rather you should complete it and most probably your symptoms will not reappear.

Consult ENT specialist for further advise.

Hope this will help you.

Thanks and Regards,
