Suggest Treatment For Constipation And Upper Abdominal Pain

I have been having upper abdominal pain for a few months. It is now happening multiple times a day. On Tuesday, I had some type of attack which lasted for 20-30 minutes ( rating pain was a 10) The pain was from my upper abdominal to mid chest. Middle below my sternum. I went to my primary care on wed. She did some blood work along with an X-ray. I received a call that it was constipation. I disagree. The nurse then calls to tell me she is calling in a prescription, protonix. I was woke. Up by an episode around 4 am and it continues to flare up off andon today (pain 4/5). Each day more frequently. Not sure what to do. I have not picked up the medicine.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are having symptoms of constipation and upper abdominal pain which is most probably due to all of the changes taking place in your body such as electrolyte imbalance. However, it could be due to an illness gastritis or IBS. But in your case the symptoms are probably due constipation.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to get up slowly and do not lie down right after eating , eat small meals or snacks often ,try not to skip meals. You should eat cold food instead of hot, eat lot of fibrous food like fresh vegetables and fruits or ginger can sometimes help an upset stomach , eating salty potato chips can help settle the stomach enough to eat a meal.

If condition doesn't get better in 2-3 days the consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may prescribe laxative , anaspas , omeprazole or antacid .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
