Suggest Treatment For Constipation In A Type 2 Diabetic Person

Brother is T-II diabetic, recovering from a stroke, taking medicine for high blood pressure. Blood sugar 230. Has not had a bowel movement in 5 days and has only urinated once today. No excessive thirst and is very lethargic. Experienced brief hallucination a few minutes ago. Nearest hospital is 45 minutes away. Suggestions?

Hi,

Since stroke can lead to immobility, dehydration, physical inactivity all of which contribute to constipation also. High blood sugar because of its negative effects on the nerves and muscle of the GIT [diabetic gastroparesis]. It is also a common cause of constipation, as such, management includes increasing water and fiber intake, regular physical activity, abdominal massage, along with stool softeners and osmotic laxatives. Please talk with your attending physician before making significant lifestyle changes and treatment options.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
