Hi, I am extremely constipated. I haven t went in 8 days. It feels like I have a brick and I can t get it out. I have been taking stool softeners and scena s pills. As well with no reliefs. Last night I tried a suppository laxative which didn t help. I am miserable. What can I do without going to the hospital?
You need to get to a hospital and get a surgeon review to examine for any signs of sub-acute intestinal obstruction. Also serum electrolytes specially potassium needs to be done to rule out paralytic ileus. X-ray erect abdomen for dilated gut loops as well as CT or ultrasound abdomen may be needed. Meanwhile stool softeners like lactulose alongside gylcerine suppositories as well as Kleen enema may be helpful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
