Suggest Treatment For Coronary Heart Disease In An Elderly Person

I am a 65 yr old male with coronary heart disease. I have been on crestor for 7 years which significantly lowered my cholesterol. Recently (6 mos) changed to Atorvastatin due to expense of Crestor. Have been experiencing calf cramping in both legs with most all exercise. Could this be related to the change to Atorvastatin? Thanks, Mark YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Sir, Hi & Welcome.

The history is suggestive of Atorvastatin induced myopathy.

Statins like Atorvastatin are known to cause myopathy (muscle pain, tenderness or weakness), liver dysfunction, stomach upset, etc as their important side effects.

I advise you to stop taking Atorvastatin and consult your treating physician to prescribed an alternate effective but a safer cholesterol lowering medication such as Cholestyramine or to reduce the dose of Atorvastatin.

Hope this answers your query/
