Suggest Treatment For Costochondritis Causing Severe Pain In Lower Sternum

I get a severe cramp in my lower sternum that takes my breath away and I can t move or inhale. It last about 30-45 seconds. Had ekg, chest X rays and was told it was costochondritis. I get these cramps once or twice a month. I was laying bed so it was nothing strenuous. It is not painful except when I get the cramp.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Repeated minor trauma to the chest wall, overuse of the arms, or viral respiratory infections can commonly cause chest pain due to costochondritis. The pain will subside in a week usually on its own.Pain killers or drugs inhibiting pain signals in the brain such as amitriptyline. may also be prescribed by your doctor. Topical application of pain killers such as diclofenac gel may also reduce discomfort.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
