Suggest Treatment For Cough And Sinusitis While Having Congestive Heart Failure
Hello, My 81 year old mother has congestive heart failure. Two weeks ago she also developed a terrible productive cough and sinusitis. She is spitting up mucus. She has no chest pain, fever, or unusual trouble breathing, but her chest and cough sound very congested and full. Also, the sinus drainage and coughing are keeping her awake at night. If I keep her on Benadryl and Robitussin she gets some relief, but if she misses a dosage the symptoms come back quickly.
Hello! I have been through your question. Related your concern I think this is a good news that your mother has not fever and trouble breathing but if this situation last more than 1 week in an old patient with congestive heart failure (like your mother have) need more attention. So, what I suggest for your mother is to do a physical examination (pulmonary auscultation, SATo2 level) by a doctor, do chest and sinus radiography to define better the diagnosis, full blood count and start antibiotic (usually for my old patient I prescribe clarithromycin or levofloxacin with probiotics for 5-7 days). During this time you should use antihistaminic , antitussive ( as you have donne), saline nasal spray, nasal corticosteroids (for short time) and ibuprofen. I hope my answer help you. I wish your mother a quick recovery.
