Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
doctor, I was released from the hospital after a 2 month bout of bi-lateral pneumonia. I had a trachea for 5 weeks was put into a coma for a few days while I was on a ventilator. The last 3 weeks of my stay was rehab. I had to learn how to walk again. I m 60 years old. So currently I am still short of breath, my legs feel like they way hundreds of pounds,I have a semi chronic short cough, my chest is tight and my shins and ankles are swollen with I think fluid. Any suggestions? Thanks Mark Ocken
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Ventilator patients may develop weakness due to results of the reduction of the muscle mass mainly affect the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory system. The administration of the cortisone, the immobility, the sepsis and hyperglycemia are included in the risk factors. Prevention is the primary therapeutic agent and this is achieved due to the early mobilization of the patients, the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and the avoidance of exposure to risk factors, etc. Fluid in the limbs may be due to anemia or decreased muscle tone, etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Continue rehabilitation and slowly improve power of muscle.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
