Suggest Treatment For Cough And Throat Itching During Pregnancy
My wife is going to go into labor any day now. She is due on the 14th, but the docs say it may be better to induce early according to their own schedule when she can check in and receive some anesthetic. A couple of days ago she visited the local hospital with her mother and seems to have caught a bug that is going around. Coughing with a scratchy throat and no other symptoms for a couple of days, the cough never lets up. It is not producing anything, just dry. Seems to be better when she is upright as opposed to laying down. This morning she is getting chills, possibly a fever. We fear she is coming down with a cold or even the flu (here in Japan). Question, are antibiotics safe in this case>? Or what else can we do so that she can have a smooth delivery?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Having cough & itchy throat suggests an allergic cough. It must be under control before she is taken up for induction-specially if she needs anesthesia IN such condition, I would have asked for her blood counts -TLC, DLC just to judge extent of allergy.Depending on results Tablet cetrizine ( 1 at bed time) along with cough syrup like Decofsyn9 @ spoons with hot water three times a day) & preventive antibiotic Azithral ( 400mg twice a day) -to provide her antibiotic cover in case of LSCS.If blood shows eosinophillia Tab hetrazan needs to be added(100mg twice/thrice according to eosinophill %) . Your doctor's advise should be taken to decide drug regime depending on blood counts/ physical signs. Thanks.
