Hello,

You are recovering from cough but you are coughing really bad at times. You are coughing out mucus and also are experiencing crackling sound in the throat and chest. You should keep yourself adequately hydrated, take plenty of water and fluids. Dryness of your throat mucosa will trigger coughing. Keep lozenges in your mouth and stay in a room well equipped with room humidifiers. Gargle with warm salt water may help.

Taking mucolytics are helpful. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP as crackling sounds in the throat and chest may be indicative of a condition in your lungs that may need immediate medical support and treatment. Your treating doctor will order you to get done some blood works, imaging tests, etc., to detect / rule out bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, etc.

Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. Smoking cessation and other lifestyle modifications will ease the underlying crackling noise. Also, limit your exposure to toxins and industrial chemicals.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
