Hi,
Birth control pills contains both estrogen and progesterone or progesterone only that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses. They are also used to restore regular menstrual periods, reduce blood loss, decrease the risk of developing ovarian cysts etc.
Like other medications, birth control pills also have some side effects such as
breakthrough bleeding or
spotting between periods,
vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain or cramps, abnormal uterine bleeding, vaginal dryness, risks of developing vaginal infections like
vaginal candidiasis, easily bruising or bleeding, breast tenderness and enlargement etc. Such side effects are mild in general and go away on their own over time. But, if these side effects persist for long or bother you, then you should consult your doctor first for
medical help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
