Suggest Treatment For Cutaneous Lesions Of The External Ear

Hi, my boyfriend has a really tiny hole on the helix of his left ear. When he was younger, he says pus used to come out of that hole, but its never given him a problem after that until now. The helix has been swollen for 2 days, hurts when pressure is applied, and pus comes out when squeezed. What should he do? Is there any home remedies to relieve the pain/swelling? Can we squeeze the pus out? Please help!

Hello,

In my opinion, it seems like your boyfriend has acquired a bacterial infection of the helix of the left ear since it is swollen, and there is pain, and also there is pus discharge. He needs a full course of antibiotic now. I would suggest my patients to take Tablet Amoxicillin with Clavulanate combination (Augmentin 625 mg) twice daily for 3 to 5 days. This is a prescription drug. Please get it prescribed by his doctor.

Also, you should not squeeze out the pus by yourself. A simple home remedy that you can try is to soak a cotton cloth in warm salted water, and apply some mild compression over the affected area to sooth the pain and reduce the swelling. You can also use any topical antibiotic cream or ointment like Povidine Iodine on the affected area thrice daily to help in faster recovery. The symptoms should resolve in a week's time. If not, please consult a ENT specialist to look for underlying cause if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shanthi E., General & Family Physician
