Suggest Treatment For Cystic Acne

Hello, I m a 33 year old female; I have struggled with acne since adolescence. Within the last 3-4 months, my breakouts have become severe: often resulting in cysts, along with whiteheads, and pastules. I have tried everything in the past and several skincare lines recently that are targeted for acne: Clinique s acne system, Murad s, and then 2 weeks ago I began a series of 3 Dermalogica resurfacing peels offered through the salon at Ulta Beauty. While visiting the salon, the aesthetician who performed my peel mentioned she had suffered cystic acne for a few years now. She suggested a new regimen for me based off of her evaluation of my skin. The regimen was La Roche -Posay mela d brightening face wash - for my hyper-pigmentation, Juicy Beauty s green apple face peel, and Pur Minerals dirty girl detoxifying mud mask- as a spot treatment on cysts or all over once a week. I would maintain this regimen at home, whIle receiving the resurfacing peels from her in the salon once a week for 3 weeks. After my first mask, it seemed like I felt a tightness in my face and my pores appeared smaller almost immediately. However, over the next few days, my skin was the worst I d ever seen it. At first, I thought it could be the products I was using at home working simultaneously with the peels from the salon could have caused my skin to be over treated. By the next week, day before next scheduled peel, my skin was literally bleeding in areas on lower half of my face. My general practitioner saw me aND prescribed Clindamycin phosphate 1% topical solution for the acne, as well as the oral antibiotic, ampicillin, 500mg 2x day. She also told me to wash my face with Panoxyl 10% acne foaming wash to use twice a day. In addition, she prescribed Mupirocin ointment usp 2% to be used on any areas likely to become infected. It has been 5 days since I ve seen my GP, and my condition has seemed to improve quite drastically for such a short period of time. I m scheduled to see a dermatologist that my GP referred me to next week. My question is : Does this seem like a good acne regimen? - the Clindamycin, Mupirocin, Panoxyl, & Ampicillin ? Would you advise me to research any additional topical or oral treatments before going to the dermatologist? I believe my GP only intended to begin the initial treatment for the current /severe outbreak, and also provide me some relief asap before getting into the dermatologist, who will then offer more prevention medications and possibly topical creams to reduce signs,of damage from scars and discoloration.

Hi,

The treatment given is not to prevent acne. The treatment given is to prevent bacterial infection to your acne. Clogging of pores causes sebum accumulation in your skin and that will lead to acne. This acne can get infected and will increase in size or may cause scarring. So for a sudden flaring of acne we have to first use antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications.

However maintain with these drugs is not suitable and is harmful. So after control initial symptoms, stop oral antibiotics and continue ointment clindamycin+ adapalene for one month, use benzoyl peroxide face wash once a month. Exercise and sugar control can provide with results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
