Suggest Treatment For Dengue And Typhoid In A Child

I have 12 year old girl relative in Kolkata, India who has been diagnosed for having both dengue and typhoid. She has been ailing for 2 weeks now. 5 days ago she had 104 deg F fever, now it is down to 98.8. She does not want to eat anything. She is being admitted to a hospital. Can you please give roughly an idea a course of treatment for her? Also how to feed her to keep her strong to fight it out? Thank you. Som Kinar at YYYY@YYYY

Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what your daughter had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, she would need strict blood counts monitoring especially platelets counts and intravenous administration of fluids according to her hematocrit to avoid dehydration as well as overhydration.

For typhoid, if blood cultures have shown any growth, may need antibiotics coverage. Rest assured in the majority of cases both are curable and reversible diseases and she will recover soon hopefully.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
