Suggest Treatment For Depression Along With Bipolar Disorder

Hi. I m a mother of a 25 year old son. My only child. I believe he may suffer from some type of bipolar, leaning more towards bipolar I, but not sure. Depression too. He s had a very difficult time the past approx 7 years. He has displayed many of the symptoms mentioned throughout my reading. My biggest problem is getting him to see a doctor. We ve discussed many times and I ve made appts for him in the past, when he has asked me to for help, however, when the time comes to go , he s bailed out of every appt. I m so concerned for him. He has had very angry episodes at times and once hurt a girlfriend. Sadly, he called 911 on himself and went to jail. He s out on bail and have attorney. He attends weekly anger management group sessions and now were anxiously awaiting the outcome of what the prosecuter will do. However, even with all this, I truly feel and think he needs help and could be bipolar, but won t help himself and/or go to appts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. Sudden onset anger outbursts, mood swings etc could occur due to bipolar disorder but should be evaluated. The diagnosis should be made by a psychiatrist. Request him to visit a psychiatrist and if he doesn't get ready, since you are his mother you can visit a psychiatrist and take proper opinion.

Medicines like Mood stabilisers, low dose antipsychotics are used commonly in treatment of bipolar disorder. Mood stabilisers like Sodium Valproate, Lithium carbonate help to stabilise mood. This will reduce the anger outbursts too. Please visit a psychiatrist for opinion.

Thanks, Take care
