Suggest Treatment For Depression

I am very depressed and at times am having panic attacks. I cannot stand to be in a large crowd and have given up all my regular shopping duties for groceries, etc...to my poor husband. When I get in the crowded parking lot of a store, my throat starts to close up and I have begun just turning around and coming back home. I only leave my house for my or my husband s doctor s appointments. I lost my job last fall and am currently physically disabled due to severe back injury and chronic pain. I have applied for disability but have not yet been approved. In the meantime, my husband s prostate cancer has shown up again and has spread and we are enrolling him in a new cancer treatment. I cannot afford an expensive medication but I feel I need some sort of antidepressant and antianxiety med. Can you recommend something?

Hello Madam,

thanks for using healthcaremagic.

I can understand your situation. You seems to be suffering from Panic disorder with agoraphobia. Secondary to panic disorder as well as to your back problem, symptoms of depression are there.

Two types of medicines are there which can be helpful in panic disorder as well as agoraphobia.
One is SSRI-Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhbitor which includes Escitalopram, Sertraline, Paroxetine, Fluoxetine.
Second is Anti anxiety medicines of benzodiazepienes group which includes lorazepam, clonazepam , etizolam.

You can discuss about these medicines with doctor and start according to cost-benefit ratio.

You will be surely benefited by these medicines. Anti anxiety will continue for short time.

Simultaneously psychotherapy, specifically CBT(Cognitive Behavior Therapy) will help you a lot and you can be wean off from medicines early or you need to take medicines in the least dose and in terms of numbers.

Hope I have answered your query,
regards,
Dr. Chintan Solanki.
