Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I am a college student and am worried about my friend who I think may be depressed. She spends a lot of her time in bed, skips classes, and sometimes goes a couple of days without eating real meals. Other times, however, she seems happy and outgoing, but then occasionally brings up topics that are causing her stress and says her life is depressing. I am confused as to whether or not she has a serious problem, or is just going through bouts of sadness like everyone else does.
Hi,thank you for using health care magic. I can understand your concern for your friend's health and I appreciate that. Your friend does have few symptoms of depression but weather or not we should call it disorder depends on detailed history of symptoms and mental status examination by psychiatrist. Depression have few other symptoms like suicidal ideas , worthlessness, weakness feeling, disinterest in surrounding etc which need to be evaluated further..There are some other possibilities also like low thyroid hormone function , low vitamin B12 level , etc. Even depression also differs in quality in different type of psychiatric disorder and their management also differs. So I would suggest you to consider psychiatric consultation for your friend. I hope this will help you in resolving your friend's health problem. Regards.
