Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Is there any fever or abdominal pain? Any blood in stools? Most of the gastroenteritis in children are viral, and need no antibiotics. Loose stools containing significant amount of mucus can suggest bacterial dysentery, but usually this will be associated with some fever, abdominal pain or bloody stools.

If he do not have any other symptoms mentioned, there is nothing wrong in waiting for 3-5 days with lactobacillus. Giving zinc for 14 days also is good. If it is not coming down by then, or if there are other symptoms mentioned, this needs antibiotic treatment. In such cases I used to give cefixime or Ciprofloxacin. Your pediatrician will guide you.

When indicated, antibiotics should be given without delay to avoid progression of infection to sepsis and other complications. It will not affect his immunity. Unnecessary courses are not good, as this will alter normal bacterial flora of gut.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
