Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea Caused By Intake Of Stool Softeners

I had total left hip replacement on 6/15/15. Went home the same day. Since surgery I have had to take only 4 hydrocondone. Took stool softener so the first 3 days. Last Tuesday I started with diarrhea-sometimes explosive. It has occurred every day 2-3 times. I have eaten normally. Any suggestion? Steve

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
This probably has more to do with an infection than the stool softeners. If you have been on antibiotics around the time of surgery you should be checked for clostridium dificile colitis with a stool culture and testing. If you have not had any antibiotics it may just be a viral infection ans should resolve on its own. See your doctor for testing if it does not resolve soon or if you have been on antibiotics in the last few months
