Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea, Vomiting And Fever In A Child

My 6 year old had diarrhea for 2 days (Thur and Fri) last week. On Saturday he vomited once, again at midnight Sunday and again Monday evening at 10:30 and this afternoon (Tues). Has not had a fever, or very low at 99. Extremely tired, sleeps almost all day and hasn t eaten anything but a few bites each day since Friday. I called the pediatrician and the nurse told me a stomach virus is going around. At what point should I be concerned or seek medical help. I am primarily concerned with dehydration, lethargy and lack or any food. Your advice?

Hello welcome to HCM

It is common in children to have diarrhoea. Your son is having diarrhoea, vomiting since last two days. There is no fever so most likely the infection is viral diarrhoea. He is feeling sleepy, tired, hadn't eaten anything so most likely he is in dehydration. I'd advise you to check his skin turgor, if the skin turgor is lost and skin is wrinkled then there is need to visit a doctor because he is having vomiting.

ORS or oral rehydration solution can be given if his vomiting reduces, otherwise IV fluids can be given to restore the hydration. Serum Sodium, Potassium should be checked to find out any electrolyte abnormalities. Medicines like Ondansetrone, Domperidone etc can be used to reduce the persistent vomiting. Take him to a doctor preferably a paediatrician for evaluation if symptoms increase in severity.

Thanks, Hope this helps. Take care
