Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Urination

I had surgery two weeks ago and was put on catheter and three days later put on self catheter. I am not having luck for going on my own. I have been able to pass about a tablespoon of urine several times. What should I do? How often should I self catheter?

Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question.
There are 2 main causes why you are having such a small amount of urine:
1. you feel tummy (abdominal) pressure like you are not able to void the bladder with the catheter- the catheter is not inserted well
2. you feel you are inserting your catheter well, no abdominal pessure but is little amount of urine coming out- your kidneys seem to produce little urine
In each case you will need to urgently see a doctor.
I understand that self catheterization is not an easy procedure. On the other hand an adult should pee at least 500 ml of urine a day so if you are not having this amount in a day you need an evaluation to check if the catheter is not inserted well and than the doctor might try to insert it well himself and train you on how to insert it. If the problem is not catheter insertion but the fact that you produce little amount of urine than the kidney function is to be checked. It means your kidneys are not working as well as they should and this is something that needs urgent medical attention to find the cause and take the proper treatment.
Hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you

Best regards,

I find this answer helpful
