Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Walking In An Elderly Person

my father, 91, just started having a walking problem where his right leg and foot don t seem to respond properly. It s like he has trouble lifting the foot and getting it to swing out for another step. once he gets going it smooths out a bit but if he stops he goes through the process of trying to get the right leg to move again. He s very stubborn and doesn t want to go to an ER (1644CST). is this something we need to insist on seeing a doctor immediately or can we watch it over the weekend?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

He has pain during movement, it indicates a joint involvement. Pain medicine over the counter can be tried to ease it out through the weekend and take him to doctor after that.

If it is weakness, numbness or burning along with the problem, it's likely to be a neurogenic problem. It is likely to increase with time and in such a condition, he is to be taken to AT at the earliest for a diagnosis and prompt remedy as per his need.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
