Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Walking With History Of Spinal Chord Compression

I have the same problem as noted below..problem lifting leg, etc. Many doctors have concluded as you did - the problem is from nerve compression in the lumbar spine and I have the MRIs that show much disc disease. However no one gives me any solution..they all seem to bypass surgery. I m 80 and in fair health and determined to recapture a normal walking gait (and balance). Thank you.

Hello,

You seem to be suffering from lumbar spondilitis and disc degeneration causing impingement of the nerve root. Sciatic nerve is getting affected. If the pain is severe, NSAIDs like ibuprofen can be used twice daily for 2 weeks. If you have severe gastric irritation or kidney failure or bleeding tendencies, NSAIDs are to be avoided.

In such cases, opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone and Tramadol can be used for pain relief. To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop to be taken once daily before food. Neuromodulators like tab. Pregabalin taken for 3 weeks. Physical therapy to strengthen lumbar muscles is advised. Considering your age, surgery is not an option.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
