Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough And Chest Congestion
My husband (male, age 67 non-smoker) has a dry cough. He doesn t seem to be congested and doesn t have a sore throat. I want to get him some cough medicine (OTC) but would appreciate some advice on which one, or which type to choose. He is Type II diabetic.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have dry cough and chest congestion which seems to be due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. You may have lung infection or bronchitis. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Take expectorants. Steam inhalation is very effective for you. Consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents. Mast cell stablizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection. Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist for acid reflux , because acid reflux can also cause dry cough . For now eat non spicy and small meals , also take antacid after every meal .
Hope your concern has been resolved.
