Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough And Scratchy Throat

Good Afternoon, I ve been having a dry cough for a few weeks now. Not a cough all day long but spuratic through out the day & night, 5-10 times per day. I ll get a scratchy throat or like a sharp needle like pain in the throat that just lasts a few seconds but makes me cough. I try drinking hot/ warm coffee or tea, & tried drinking ice water also. nothing really seems to help. It feels sensitive towards the back of my right jawbone & to feel under the bone going towards my neck feels slightly swollen or just a little more filled in. I m on a blood pressure medication, I m sorry I don t have the name of it with me. I m on the bp med because the bp has been elevated the last few months, & I have a valve that the dr said was allowing blood to backwash...this being in one of the top quads of the heart. he said the medication should help both the bp & the heart issue. I m also on estrodial & Indomethacin 50mg. I get heartburn quite often have been on Lansoprazole 30mg delayed release but have to be honest, don t take it everyday as I should. thought I would ask for thoughts on this before making a dr appt. I don t feel its post nasel drip. any thoughts or suggestions? thank you so much for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms you mentioned are likely due to bacterial or viral infection. First of all a physical examination is necessary with proper history to see what is the underlying cause for the symptoms. Some blood tests might be needed to get done.

Depending on the cause antibiotics or antivirals if needed will be prescribed by your doctor.

It takes at least 5-7 days for the symptoms to go away. Apart from this, continue your other medications as per your doctor’s advice. Do not change the dose or stop them without consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
