Suggest Treatment For Dry Throat And Nose

I am a 54-year-old going thru menopause and have gained quit a bit of weight since then. I m currently experiencing thoat and nose dryness. Can t seem to be able to keep my sinuses moist; I drink 6-7 glasses of water a day. I tried mucinex, saline even 50/50 part water and peroxide sprayed into my nose to kill bacteria and keep my nose moist; the problem gets worse while lying down to sleep; It seems my passages (thoat and nose) begin to close up and it s becomes hard to breath.the mucus in my nose is most times as thick and sticky as glue and I have to continue swabbing a Q- tip with water to keep it moist. I often stuggle to make enough saliva in order to be able to swallow. THANKS.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history well and understood the concerns. Since you are a 54 year old woman undergoing menopause, the hormonal changes in the body has affected your nose, oral cavity and throat adversely. This can be case of atrophic rhinitis with pharyngitis sicca wherein the glands that keep these cavities moist go into atrophy. Hence your tries at home are not working well and in fact can cause complications if not done under the guidance of a Doctor, preferably an ENT Surgeon.

Hence I would advise you the following:
* Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, ENT Endoscopy of nose and all to know the exact diagnosis.
* Also consult a Gynecologist as you may need HRT that is hormonal replacement therapy which may act upon the nose and oral cavity to give you enough fluids locally.
* Also take therapeutic replacement of calcium, Vitamin D, A and other multivitamins, mineral and trace elements along with Lycopene as these helps in rejuvenating the mucosal lining.

I hope this answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant
