Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 2. 5 days ago my son complained of ears hurting once. That s the last I heard of that. Fastofreward to yesterday he spiked a 104 degree fever quickly and without warning anything was wrong. Today he complained of war pain all day and I noticed his ears were red on outside. We went to ped who checked his ears twice, said they were unremarkable. My question is... Can mastoiditis be seen through the otoscope? Does he have to have a current ear infection to have mastoiditis? I am debating going to the ENT tomorrow, I want to be prepared when we go.
The symptoms of your child seem to be related to an ear infection. Mastoiditis can not be seen through otoscope. Through otoscope we can only see the ear canal infection. I recommend to use anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen Ibuprofen relieve the inflammation. I also suggest to use an antibiotic ear drop to treat the infection locally. If the symptoms continue, you should see an ENT specialist.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
