For the last 6 mos. I have noticed enlarged papillae on the back of my tongue, they don't hurt just drive me crazy. I have tried pro biotic with no luck. I am a smoker of alternative medicines as well and notice that they tend to get more irritated when I medicate.
I have gone through your query and can understand..
As per your complain swollen taste buds at the back of tongue seems to be swollen Circumvallate Papillae and can be due to a number of causes like oral and throat infection, acid reflux, smoking, post nasal drip, allergies etc.. In your case it can be due to smoking as you are a smoker and heat and chemical irritation can lead to swollen taste buds.. You should quit smoking and can do warm saline gargles.. Suck ice and do cool water rinses.. Avoid spicy food and drink plenty of water.. In case of no improvement consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..
Hope this information helps..
