Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Thyroid Gland

Hello Doctor, I have been suffering from frequent panic attacks and anxiety disorder and did many tests and every doctor told that I have the Anxiety Disorder until recently diagnosed with left thyroid lobe swelling with cystic change. There is a medium sized lump on my left lobe of thyroid and this is creating all the problems for the last few years. I was suggested with RAI therapy. But consulting with the doctor in the Nuclear Dept. told me not to take radio iodine. Now I have been taking 10mg Proparnolol, 0.5 mg clonazepam (cutting into half, as I have been taking 0.25 mg for the last 4 months to withdraw) and Rabeprazole. What will be the best treatment option for my thyroid gland enlargement?

Hi,

Treatment of the thyroid problem in your case will depend on the values of the TSH and FT4 and also on the result of the scintigraphy of the thyroid. If you have one nodule that produces a lot of thyroid hormones the best therapy might be removing that nodule.

If there are a few nodules producing the thyroid hormones then it might be best to take oral drugs (propylthiouracil) to reduce production of the hormones. Sometimes in these cases radioactive iodine is used to destroy the thyroid gland but this may lead to low function of the gland in a few years after treatment and need for thyroid hormone replacement for all your life.

It is the endocrinologist that needs to evaluate the above information on thyroid function and presence of nodules that produce hormones and results of tests to determine which is the best treatment in your case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
