Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Tonsils, Diarrhea And Fatigue

My niece age 23 experiencing swollen glands, enlarged tonsils, diarrhea, fatigue. Initial dx based on CBC was mono. She took stool sample to the Kaiser lab today. Dr. prescribed metronidazole and I wonder if this antibiotic will work on the throat symptoms. She is to have more blood work after 3rd day of Rx. Dr. said could be a brother of mono. Your thoughts??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms of the child seem to be related to tonsillitis which is an infection of the tonsils.

I agree with your doctor to use an antibiotic to treat the infection.

I recommend using anti-inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen to relieve the symptoms.

I also suggest using a throat spray for antibacterial properties.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
