Suggest Treatment For Extreme Tightness In The Calf Muscles

I was running today and my calf felt extremely tight. I stopped a couple times to gently stretch them out. Then shortly after I started running again BAM!, -- it felt like I got shot in the left calf I had to walk a painful mile back home. It has been over an hour and the pain is still bad. However the is no discoloration and it doesn t appear to be any swelling that I can notice. What is this and should I treat it with heating pad or cold compress?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You can treat with a heating pad. Based on the description of the symptoms, it is likely injury to the soft tissue of the calf.

Soft tissue injuries can involve the muscle, ligaments, tendons.
Spasm of the muscle seems to have occurred, this would cause the acute severe onset of pain.

The heating pad would help to relax the muscle. The use of anti inflammatory medication may also be helpful as well eg naproxen or ibuprofen

I hope this helps
