Suggest Treatment For Fatty Liver And Raised ALT Levels

I have a question regarding fatty liver. My alt level was 65 and CT scan showed mild to moderate fatty infiltration of liver. I am overweight and have had slightly raised alt levels for about 2 years. Is this reversible with weight loss? When would you know if condition progressed to scarring possible cirrhosis? Thankyou. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Anne,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
ALT levels with 65 IU/L and CT scan depicting mild to moderate cirrhosis of liver certainly is a concern as it states there is some amount of hepatocellular dysfunction.
However, its progress to complications such as cirrhosis or liver failure can be prevented by undertaking the following.
1. Reducing your weight gradually and controlling blood glucose levels effectively.
2. Abstaining from drinking alcohol and smoking, if you are habituated to.
3. Eating a healthy diet by avoiding high carbohydrate diet and high fat diet. Strictly avoid junk foods and aerated drinks. Intake of moderate quantity of proteins, foods rich in vitamins and minerals, high fibre diet and intake of more quantities of fluids would help.
4. Take antioxidant preparations containing Vitamin E and Selenium regularly.
5. Do follow-up ultrasound scan and monitor Liver Function Test (LFT) once in 3 months to know the status.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
