Suggest Treatment For Fever, Headache, Stiff Neck And Diarrhea

I have been experiencing a fever, headache, stiff neck, weakness, and chills on and off for several months now. About a month ago, I had severe, simultaneous diarrhea and vomiting along with fever. My doctor said it was gastroenteritis. That went away and I felt just fine except for the recurrent fever. Last night my temp was at 100.8 ( along with headache, stiff neck, weakness, tired, bloating and stomach ache) before the Advil kicked in. It did reduce the fever, and was gone when I woke up. The same symptoms came back after a few hours of being up and around. Do you have any ideas about what may be causing it and recommendations? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on your symptoms of fever, headache, stiff neck, weakness, chills, diarrhea, and vomiting, it is possible that you may have a bacterial or viral infection, such as meningitis or sepsis. These are serious conditions that require immediate medical attention, so it is important that you see a doctor right away.

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord. Its symptoms include fever, headache, and stiff neck. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection, and symptoms include fever, chills, weakness, and diarrhea.

Other possible causes of your symptoms could include a urinary tract infection, respiratory infection, or even Lyme disease, which is caused by a tick bite.

To determine the exact cause of your symptoms, your doctor may order blood tests, a spinal tap, or other diagnostic tests. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause, but may include antibiotics, antiviral medication, or other therapies.

In the meantime, it is important to rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed by your doctor. Avoid contact with others to prevent the spread of any potential infection, and seek medical attention immediately if your symptoms worsen or if you experience new symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
