Suggest Treatment For Fluctuating BP

I am 68 years old and have never had high blood pressure. For the past week my BP has fluctuated between 145/80 and today at one point (before walking 2 miles) it was 159/78. Upon returning from my walk, it was 154/78; 147/78. I am concerned because it has never been that high for any period of time. With that said, I have been having some thyroid issues and my Dr. has changed the dosage of Synthroid. Also, have had some sinus issues for a couple of weeks. Q. Could the thyroid and sinus, cause the elevation in BP? Thank you.

Hello,

You are suffering from fluctuations in blood pressure. You have history of having sinus problem and thyroid problem. Thyroid problems do play role in elevation of blood pressure. Thyroid disorders are also responsible for symptoms like extreme fatigue, anxiety, blood pressure abnormalities, and other systemic changes.

Constriction or stiffening of the vessels occurs with less T3, thus decreasing the size of the vessels. Blood in less flexible vessels increases the pressure put on the vascular system, elevating the blood pressure. This leads to clinically discernable hypertension.

Other contributing factors that may play role in causing blood pressure fluctuations are obesity, hyperglycemias, developing CAD, coronary artery disease. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Before treatment you will have to get done echocardiogram, EKG, blood works like lipid function tests, blood sugar(F/PP), stress tests, etc. It will be treated accordingly with diuretics, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, alpha or betablockers, etc., depending on the diagnosis made.

In the meantime, lose weight if obese. Take a heart-healthy diet with less salt. Do regular physical activity like exercises and walking. Quit intake of alcohol, smoking or addictions if any. Get at least 8 hrs of sleep.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Fluctuating blood pressure can be caused by several factors, including underlying health conditions, stress, medication, and lifestyle factors. In your case, it's possible that the changes in your Synthroid dosage and sinus issues could be contributing to your high blood pressure. It's important to continue monitoring your blood pressure regularly and discuss any concerns with your doctor.

In terms of treatment, if lifestyle changes such as reducing salt intake, increasing physical activity, and managing stress do not help control your blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe medication. There are several classes of medication that can help lower blood pressure, including diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and others. The choice of medication will depend on your individual health status and other factors.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
